iPad® EHRs and EMRs Improve Efficiency

A recent study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, tracked the Apple® iPad® usage of 115 residents of internal medicine at the University of Chicago who were given the device to use during their rounds. The study found that the addition of the iPads helped residents to be more efficient at ordering tests and procedures for their patients.

During their rounds, the residents used iPad electronic health records (EHRs) and other interfaces in conjunction with the device. The iPad allowed residents to contact the hospital laboratory and other departments to order tests and view results. MediTouch EHR® users also perform similar tasks using iPad technology.

The residents at University of Chicago were able to reduce their workload by about a half hour each day thanks to the iPad. After a few months using the device, four out of five residents in the study said they were more efficient using the iPad, and 68 percent said they avoided delays in patient care. If such improvements can be made with the simple addition of a tablet computer, like the iPad, imagine what could be accomplished when the iPad is used in conjunction with HealthFusion’s® MediTouch® software suite. iPad® 3 Release Rumors — Don’t get rid of your iPad 2® just yet.

Doctor using iPad EHR

The hype behind the much anticipated iPad® 3 is almost palpable, although somewhat surprising given the fact that the iPad 2® was released less than a year ago. However, in the technology sector’s version of “keeping up with the Jones’”, Apple® reigns supreme, and every product release or even its rumor is treated with more publicity and fanfare than Black Friday savings specials.

So as the Apple product release calendar returns to the more traditional timeline, the rumor mill has heated up again with an impending announcement of an iPad 3 release. Apple of course has done its part as usual to remain neutral on the topic, only further exacerbating the swirling rumors, theories, and concept mockups circulating the Internet. However, one piece of gossip seems to be confirmed: Apple will hold a press conference on March 7th at 10am PST in San Francisco, the topics to be discussed will remain unknown until that date, but that has never and will never stop the masses from conjecturing about the possibilities. Web-Based EHR Computing: What about the hardware?

cloud-computing

If you choose a Web-based EHR cloud computing platform like HealthFusion’s MediTouch EHR® solution, then making hardware decisions is relatively easy. First of all, your practice does not need to buy or maintain expensive servers. If you don’t need to buy expensive servers, then hardware decisions essentially become a no-brainer (and with fewer IT headaches). A good way to assess your hardware needs is to evaluate by the role of software users…

Front and Back Office Users — The chances are that your front office (the members of your team that are responsible for scheduling and check-in) and back office (your billing team) already are equipped with computers. Continue reading…
